Fear Nightfall: Remains of Chaos Reviews
Unbalanced not scary boring modpack
This is some sort of “vanilla+” modpack with custom textures, shaders and a lot of “scary” stuff like cave dweller. It has only a few major mods: Immersive Engineering, Hexerei, Biomancy 2 and The Aether. The first two can be skipped, to be honest I don’t even know what IE is doing there (it doesn’t really fit in this modpack anyway). The goal of the modpack is to defeat Herobrine, the villain who is the reason why all the scary stuff happens. Quite basic lore, you can sometimes find a few notes of what happened in some structures, but they are all very basic and not that interesting.
**Gameplay.** The game feels very unbalanced. Anyone can kill you at anytime with a few shots. I remember trying to use shield once to deflect an attack and just died, because the mob just ignored it for some reason. So it means you have to be very prepared and also skilled to not die that easily. The spawn rates of mobs are so boosted you can’t explore the caves easily. You have to dig tunnels or just hope you light the area and not die in the process. The sea creatures are insanely fast and deal high damage. You can’t really explore the world at night. I don’t wish to sit only at my base at nights doing nothing. The hard difficulty is not the problem here, the gameplay just becomes very and very annoying and not challenging. And remember, nothing here is scary. The sanity system is also annoying: every time you fight monsters or get wet, it decreases. You have to sit at campfires for minutes to restore it. Reaching the low sanity will spam a huge text on your screen and play loud sounds. It becomes almost impossible to play. So it’s just another annoying aspect of the gameplay: you have to sit at your campfire for 5 minutes before continuing surviving at these times.
**Performance.** When I tried to make candles with effects, I accidentally corrupted the world and now can’t join it without a crush. I don’t know why it happened, so always make sure to do backups to not lose the world. Good it was just a test world but it’d be very unsatisfying to see it happen in my actual world. Also, the modpack sometimes lags for no reason and you have to restart the game. In general, the performance is okay, I haven’t seen lagspikes and my fps was optimal. It is not surprising though, there are not many mods.
In conclusion, the modpack is very boring. It is probably the best attempt to create a horror modpack and it is still not scary at all. The lore is quite basic. There’s not much to explore, and also it has only a few interesting mods. And in my opinion the aesthetics are unpleasant (I don’t feel Minecraft should be played that way, it is not designed to be a horror at all). Just take vanilla with all the major mods, remove all the scary stuff and it becomes infinitely better, because there will be nothing to annoy you.
A "scary" modpack
Maybe scary for the first 10 minutes of playing, then all the different sounds and texture changes become annoying. Couldn’t play this modpack any longer because I just found myself digging inside the ground, progressing through mods and making easiest traps to trap so-called “scary̶1; mobs with “improved” ai
Turn off shaders and texturepack, and play vanilla minecraft with moderately harder mobs and immersive engineering.
