Frigid – Winter Apocalypse Reviews
Frigid is Nice! But it could do more...
Decided to give Frigid 2.0.0 a shot based off of the previous review on this page, and it’s a fairly simple but very clean little themed survival modpack!
It’s greatest strength is probably in how concise it feels – Very few mods means the core of the modpack feels very focused, and the custom content and progression is all very clean and purposeful. I do think more consideration could be taken to boost the pack though in terms of game mechanics, namely something better than a Corpse system (since it creates an annoying punishment loop when you die.) Having a co-op revival mod in here would also make co-op play a lot more interesting, and could even make Hardcore playthroughs more viable too.
The aesthetic is lovely – A regular overworld, but with a white snowy coat of paint over even hot biomes like Mesas works surprisingly well, despite how simple it is. The custom main menu is great, and the custom music is an excellent touch that also helps set the tone of the pack better than vanilla’s music ever could. I do think the pack could do with more custom texture work, though.
As-is, it feels a little too close to vanilla Minecraft and a little lacking in identity. Even changing the brown of Minecraft’s dirt into a bluer hued rock could help – Make it feel a little less like the pack’s a reskin of Minecraft and more like it’s own thing. Retexturing the gun sprites to feel more ‘Minecrafty’ would also go a long way for cohesion too.
This is also minor, but for whatever reason, chunks are really bad about popping in, even past the fog that surrounds you. It’s quite distracting and shouldn’t be happening with how well the pack runs.
My two BIG sore spots though are…
1. The length
Right as me and my good skeletal friend were really getting into the groove of it and were underprepared-yet-curious to make use of our newly acquired Boiler and Hearth for The Nether, we learnt that… It’s disabled. You can light the portal, but it just outright tells you that the Nether is not apart of the experience. Which sucks! There’s a lot you can do with the Nether, even if you want to keep the cold theming intact. I even co-created a datapack called the Glacia for it once, which turns it into an ice dimension too.
Even if it was left untouched though, I’d be fine with that – As is though, it means this progression-focused modpack currently has no endgame to my knowledge. This is insanely disappointing.
Second, and more disruptively…
2. ||The Goatman||
I’ve never purposefully put myself in front of the firing line of a Dweller mod or modpack, but I figured that one’s inclusion here would be integrated in a way that wasn’t about as lame as you can get. Here, the Goat Man is VERY fast, VERY strong, and even beyond that, it BLINDS and WEAKENS you when it touches you, leaving you effectively zero counterplay when it shows up other than maybe to shoot it IF you get the chance to catch it first. This thing SUCKS. The fear factor it creates is cool, but the feeling of groaning over KNOWING you’re basically guaranteed to die when you hear it wail is a recipe for frustration.
Small but minor note, also – The lantern crafting recipe is broken, so there’s currently no means of gaining permanent light. This was quite annoying to deal with.
Despite all this, I did genuinely enjoy my time with the pack a lot. I’d love for these criticisms to be addressed in the future, because with more polish, I genuinely think this pack could one day be a standout amongst solid survival packs.
Frigid is a great solo and multiplayer experience.
As the Title says, Frigid is an **Amazing** Solo adventure, great with friends too. The atmosphere is the perfect mix of scary but comforting, ||The Goat man freaks me out||. The Music is Immaculate! And I could very much so find myself listening to it even when not playing the Modpack.The Texture art is amazing and it looks as if it’d be actual textures in regular Minecraft, The Modpack itself runs **Amazingly**, I’ve never seen myself with so much FPS! Overall, this Modpack is great. I do recommend it to people looking for something fun to play. (this is my first review on here. Well, first review ever, I don’t even think I’ve heard of this site before.)
