FTB Legend of the Eyes Reviews
Good Idea that Ends Up Rather Bland
This pack has the bones of a really great modpack. The main goal is to unlock the end portal and fight the Ender Dragon. To do this, instead of making regular eyes of ender, you have to obtain 12 out of the 16 unique eyes, each with a different way to obtain them. You can’t repeat eyes, you have to have 12 different ones to open the portal.
The ways range from simple – kill the wither – to more complex – find a specific structure, cure the zombie villager in the basement, and make a trade – and from exploration – find an eye in a large sprawling dungeon – to crafting – craft an eye using Create and Industrial Revolution. Each eye has a unique criteria and it’s clear a lot of thought went into each of them.
Which is what makes it frustrating, as the rest of the pack seems to have very little thought or care put into it. The quests are blandly written, no personality or flavor, there aren’t a lot of interesting additional mods in the pack, and there are only a few added structures. Waystones is in there, thank goodness, but no real faster transportation mod. There’s an option to cycle villager trades, but no way to easily move them (or pick them up) besides the Waystones warp plates. (Here I reveal my bias that I love Easy Villagers and miss it when it’s not part of a pack.)
I played for several hours across three days, got two eyes, and was searching for diamonds to make my next gear when I realized I just wasn’t having a lot of fun. It felt like a modpack that was just mildly entertaining, something to waste time, not something to actively enjoy. Very mid, a mediocre experience.
I really wanted to enjoy this pack. I loved the individual quests for each eye, and I loved that you could skip four of them if you didn’t want to do them. They used the Ponder system from Create to show what to do in certain quests, which was a fantastic idea. But the rest of it just wasn’t there. I quit before reaching the dragon, so I don’t know how good the fight was, but I understand it was changed and made much harder.
Avoid this pack if you want to focus on building with modded blocks, want quests with rewards or flavor, dislike traveling/adventuring, or want to focus on automation or technology. Try it if you like exploration or enjoy vanilla+ packs but want to try something a bit more complex but not overwhelming.
