Blightfall Reviews
If I had to name one: the most inspired modpack of all time
This pack has it all. A handcrafted world. Custom story. A wonderful evolution of what we know and love in terms of pack design. Blightfall truly takes the custom modded experience to the next level, to a degree that has **never** been repeated since. This modpack is a rare masterpiece, and a *must play* for anyone who enjoys Thaumcraft. It takes everything you typically do and know, flips it on its head and fills in the cracks.
A unique experience that brings a lot to the table
Blightfall is an excellent iteration on the “-block” type of pack, in which space is limited and you have to use your limited resources to expand and grow. What makes it unique is that the rest of the world still exists for you to explore and mine, but it’s been made hostile and uninhabitable by the blight. Cleansing the world is incredibly satisfying, and the occasional frantic dash through blighted terrain in order to reach another safe zone adds a ton of excitement. The quests are cohesive, full of both excellent lore and careful guidance through the pack’s changes to the progression line. If I had to give one complaint, it would be that sometimes the custom mobs can be a bit overtuned, leading to some scenarios where the best option is to build a box with a one-block hole in it and throw ranged spells or arrows through it until the enemy falls over, but that might just have been my impatience pushing me into areas I wasn’t ready for yet.
The best pack of all time
(Disclaimer: I played this pack ~4 years ago. Any updates since then are not taken into account.)
If Thaumcraft has 1 hater, it’s me. But Blightfall places Thaumcraft center stage in a way that just works.
Instead of being afraid to do anything in the mod because of a risk of taint, the world starts out as tainted as could be. The only place to go from here is up.
But most importantly, the premade map is incredible. Seeking out new biodomes is a fantastic form of early-game progression. The tainted city later on, and how the pack utilizes Blood Magic, adds so much life to the pack. How many modpacks can you say have an actual plot?
The only issue I had with the pack was the ending. Probably don’t read beyond this point if you want to avoid spoilers.
The machine that purifies the world takes forever and does a tiny chunk at a time. It’s not epic, or interesting. By the time you make it, you’ve already done everything else, so you just sit there waiting for the machine to work. I stopped playing at that point; I had already completed my goals, and all that was left was waiting for the game to catch up.
Thaumaturge's dream
This pack is a twist on a normal gameplay loop in a pack with Thaumcraft 4 in it, setting you in a scenario of very limited space and growing outwards from the little domes of safety with normally quite useless ethereal blooms, but in Blightfall they are your best friend in the early game! Tons of exploring and little secrets to be found all over the map, generally a great pack for everyone 🙂
Fun story experience
One of the best 1.7.10 quest packs, it puts you on an alien planet inhabited entirely by Thaumcraft’s Taint mechanic, with the tainted mobs that come with it. Has a great story, and interprets the quest book as a communications device to chat with the crew of the spaceship you beam down from, which is unique. Unfortunately, gets a bit grindy near the end, but thanks to the recent community update, it’s not as bad as it once was. Also unfortunate that it is locked to Technic Launcher due to copyright, and the creator can’t make any derivative works. Still a really fun modpack.
Best modpack ever
This modpack has everything to appeal to both beginners and experienced players. It goes beyond simple quest lines; it’s a whole world, a lore that has been created. The quests are there to tell the story of this modpack. Their main purpose is to assist the player in progressing by learning about the various mods included in this pack.
